Wednesday, April 11, 2018
More than 70 fourth- and fifth-graders from Pattonville's elementary schools and Remington Traditional School participated in the fourth annual Elementary Battle of the Books on March 22. Each school sent two teams of six students to compete.

The Da' Books and Beyond team from Bridgeway Elementary School won first place. Second place went to the We ARE Mark Twain team from Parkwood Elementary School. The Book Force 1 team from Bridgeway placed third. The first-place team won the right to display the elementary book battle first-place banner in their school library for a year.

Students in Bridgeway's first-place team were Aiva Barry, Monse Cruz, Maddie DeWick, Mia Gallagher, Nick Klock and Matthew Wasser.

Students in Parkwood's second-place team included Andrea  Aguilar, Alivia Ball, Violeta Bustos, Layla Chacin, Melaina Prentice and Ayda Wallace.

Third-place team members from Bridgeway were Aliya Curry, Kyren Eleby, Mark Kendrick, Riley McKeever, Cheyenne Smith and Joana Tena-Gaona. Emily Perez was an alternate.

The book battle is a trivia-type competition hosted by Pattonville's school library technology specialists. During the event, teams of students compete on their knowledge of a predesignated list of books. For the elementary contest, participating students read from among the 12 books nominated by the Missouri Association of School Librarians for the Mark Twain Reader Award. All fourth- through sixth-grade students in Missouri are encouraged to vote for their favorite books in the Mark Twain Reader program (if they have read at least four of the nominated books). Pattonville has also hosted a middle school Book Battle for 11 years with more than 30 teams competing from across the St. Louis region annually.

Library technology specialists who organized this year's elementary book battle were: Nora Bakula from Bridgeway; Tammi Buckner from Drummond Elementary School; Dawn Kasper-Bamberger from Parkwood; Allison Stout from Remington Traditional School; Debbie Bicket from Rose Acres Elementary School; and Jen Bober from Willow Brook Elementary School.
